Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy uses essential oils, which are applied through massage.

Essential oils have been used throughout history, mainly for their healing and cosmetic properties. Today they are widly used in medicine, cosmetics, disinfectants and cleaning products.

There are two ways in which they can penetrate the body, absorption through the skin and inhalation through the nose. There are then three ways in which the essential oils can effect the body.

Physiologically :

Our body uses chemical messages and impulses to work. Chemicals in the essential oils can interact with the chemical messages and impulses being sent around the body enabling changes to the way they work. For example, an essential oil with relaxing and de-stressing properties will help with relieving the symptoms of stress by slowing the heart and breathing rate down or encourage muscles to relax.

Pharmacological :

The chemicals in the essential oils interact with the bodies chemicals (enzymes, hormones and neurotransmitters), and have a subtle effect on the way they work.

Psychologically :

As the oils are massaged into the skin and warmed it release the essential oil’s molecules, which are then inhaled. Once registered by the membranes and nerves, a message is sent up to the brain, the area which is associated with emotions, memory and instinct. For example if it is a aroma that reminds you of a good holiday or happy memories it can provoke a positive response and relaxation. If you the dislike the aroma, then a positive response is unlikely.

Essential oils are carefully extracted from plant material such as flowers, leaves, bark and seeds. Often referred to as the plant’s life force as they are similar to animal hormones.
All essential oils I purchase are of the highest quality and when possible organic.
On appointment a selection of essentials with the properties required for you treatment will be available for you to choose. Once you have selected a range of oils to your liking I will then select the appropriate oils to make your blend.
